Just Neighborhoods: COVID 19 Preventing Illegal Evictions Plan MLP

The pandemic represents a time for the government to tap into community networks and focus on prevention and community care and safety supports, as these are more effective strategies than focusing on punishing bad behavior. Just Neighborhoods are neighborhoods where community and government work together to prevent problems through training, resources, and community messaging. MLP provides suggestive guidelines to local government and law enforcement on how to improve illegal eviction actions taking place in the State.

Policy Working Brief: Housing & Poverty

Policy changes and community education can assist us in addressing the systemic challenges that create and exacerbate poverty and lead to people living on the street. The Medical-Legal Partnership offers a working memo of policy changes that can assist us in being better advocates, as well as responses to counter common myths about the availability of assistance and systems that serve those in poverty.

CBP Will Keep Access to I-94s for COFA Immigrants on the Website Indefinitely in Response to Community Advocacy

April 29, 2022

We are happy to share that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has agreed to keep I-94s on the CBP website indefinitely for citizens of COFA countries, as well as for other individuals who are admitted for "duration of status," meaning the I-94 does not have an expiration date. This victory was in response to a community letter signed by 244 individuals, representing 42 organizations and themselves, and supported by Senator Hirono's office. This technical change will have huge impacts for the lives of COFA status families.

The purpose of this essay is to introduce our developing pedagogy of community partner- ship through the lens of MLPC Hawai‘i’s work and model before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This essay highlights key tenets of MLPC’s pedagogy, MLPC’s work during COVID-19 and related crises, and challenges faced by MLPC’s lawyering model, including external criticisms and funding complexities.
